Head Coach

Coach Jessica Stoddard, a former 6-time NCAA All-American and 7-time High School All-American, is entering her 21st year of high school coaching and her 9th season leading the Detroit Catholic Central Swimming & Diving program. Since joining the Shamrocks in 2017, she has elevated CC into one of Michigan’s premier programs. Under her leadership, the Shamrocks captured four consecutive CHSL Championships, three Oakland County Championships, and achieved the program’s highest-ever finish at the MHSAA State Finals—2nd place in 2019. CC was also poised for a state title in 2020 before the season was cut short. The team has remained among the state’s elite, finishing 4th in 2021, 8th in both 2022 and 2023, 3rd in 2024, and 5th in 2025. A recognized sprint specialist, Stoddard has coached some of the fastest athletes in Michigan history. Her teams have broken 8 school records, 8 CHSL records, and 2 Oakland County records while producing 22 State Champions, 141 All-State honors, and 46 All-American recognitions. Among her standout athletes is Mario McDonald, a state champion and All-American who went on to become the first Michigander to break 19 seconds in the 50 freestyle and an NCAA All-American at The Ohio State University. Other notable Shamrocks include Luke Mychalowych (University of Minnesota) and Camren Turowski (Ohio State commit), earning Dream Team honors in the 50 and 100 freestyle. In total, 18 of her athletes have advanced to compete at the collegiate level. Her teams are just as successful academically, earning 8 consecutive Academic All-State and Academic All-American team honors, highlighted by a 2021 team GPA of 3.92. She was named the Boys Zone 2 Coach of the Year in 2020. Before joining CC, Stoddard served as the head coach for the Walled Lake Northern girls’ program beginning in 2006, leading the Lady Knights to 11 City Championships, six straight KLAA North Division titles, and a runner-up finish in the Lakes Valley Conference. Her swimmers earned 11 Academic All-State and 7 Academic All-American team honors, with 17 moving on to collegiate programs and multiple achieving All-State and All-American honors. A Pennsylvania native, Stoddard was a standout sprint freestyler, winning a PIAA state title in the 50-yard freestyle, placing 4th at Nationals twice, and earning 8 All-State, 7 All-American, and 6 NCAA All-American honors. A former Michigan State and Clarion University swimmer, she was also a Big Ten finalist, U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier, and U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete recipient. With more than two decades of experience, Coach Stoddard has devoted her life to developing scholar-athletes both in and out of the pool. She currently serves on the MHSAA Swimming & Diving Executive Committee and continues to be a model of championship character, leadership, and excellence for the Detroit Catholic Central community.
Kelsey Slayton

Kelsey Slayton

Assistant Coach

Kelsey has been an assistant coach for the Detroit Catholic Central Swim Team since the 2020-2021 season. She has over 10 years of experience coaching, and was a 4 year collegiate swimmer at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, where she competed primarily as a 100/200 butterflyer and a sprint freestyler. Kelsey swam for Coach Jessica at Walled Lake Northern from 2007-2011, and was team captain for both her high school and college swim teams. Kelsey is a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy, graduating from the University of Michigan - Flint in August 2024. She currently works at Adams Sports Medicine in Novi and is their current Sports Resident. This residency is a year-long post-graduate program that will prepare her to sit for her board exam to become a Board-Certified Sports Clinical Specialist in physical therapy. Since college, Kelsey has stayed active by participating in Crossfit for the past 10 years. She also enjoys camping and hiking and enjoys finding new ways to challenge herself athletically. This summer she learned to row with Kensington Community Rowing Center and plans to return next season. In addition to coaching for DCC, Kelsey has coached with Coach Jessica at Edgewood Country Club since 2012, and spent 1 season as assistant swim coach with Jessica at WLN in 2015 and head coach of the Banks-Geisler middle school swim team for the 2015-2016 season.

Assistant Coach

Now entering his ninth year with the Detroit Catholic Central Swim & Dive program, Marty Brinkman has been an integral part of the team’s continued success and culture of excellence. A seasoned high school and CYO football coach, Marty joined the Shamrock swim staff in 2017—Coach Jessica Stoddard’s inaugural season—and quickly became a trusted mentor and leader both on deck and beyond the pool. A proud husband and father, Marty and his wife Lisa (married in 1987) have four children and two sons-in-law: Annemarie (Michael), Joseph (CC ’11, swim alum), Colin (CC ’14, swim alum), and Clare (Eugene). The Brinkmans are also proud grandparents, with their sixth grandchild expected in January 2026. Marty’s life is rooted in faith, family, and service—values he brings to every practice and meet, inspiring the next generation of Shamrocks to lead with integrity, humility, and heart.
Bella Hocking

Bella Hocking

Assistant Coach

Bella started swimming at the age of 7 and continued through high school. She grew up swimming both summer league and year round in California. She swam at Walled Lake Northern High School where she was a 3-time State qualifier in relays. Bella graduated in 2024 with Bachelor of Science degrees in Forensic Biology and Psychology from Purdue University. She has coached at Edgewood Country Club for the last 5 years, and just finished her first season coaching for Marian High School. Bella believes that swimming is not only a great team sport but a lifetime skill. No matter what life throws at you at any age, you can always come back to the pool and work it out. Her goal is for every swimmer to succeed and find their place on the team and within the community. She is very excited to have this opportunity to join the team at Detroit Catholic Central High School!
