Mary Washington Continues Dominance With Capital Athletic Conference Wins

The Mary Washington women's swimming team continued its record winning streak at CAC Championships with its 27th straight title on Saturday at St. Mary's. The Eagles are the only team have ever won the title in the 27-year history of the CAC, the only team across all 21 conference sports to hold such a streak. 

The Eagles took gold in 12 of 19 events and totaled 991.5 points to claim the title. York cruised to second place with 547 points, while just 9.5 points separated third through fifth. Marymount secured third place with 403.5 points, followed closely by St. Mary's (396) and Salisbury (394). Frostburg State took sixth at 361.

Frostburg State's Macey Nitchie became the first Bobcat to earn Swimmer of the Year of the after winning three individual golds. Nitchie won the 50 freestyle on Friday, the 200 freestyle on Saturday, the finished the sprint freestyle sweep on Sunday with a title in the 100 in an NCAA 'B' cut time of 52.08. 

York head coach Greg Doyle won Coach of the Year, becoming the second Spartans' women's coach to nab the honor. 
UMW's Julia Geskey captured Rookie of the Year accolades. Geskey won the 100 backstroke and was a part of three relay golds for the Eagles. She is the 15th UMW swimmer to receive Rookie of the Year honors.

UMW's Anna Corley, the 2016 Swimmer of the Year, wrapped up her final championship with seven total golds, including two on Sunday. Corley touched first in the 100 IM and teamed with Geskey, Lauren Wood, and Shannon Coryell for a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay on Sunday. Corley's 100 IM time set a new CAC and championship meet record at 58.15. 

Also victorious for the champion Eagles were Maddy Rymer in the 200 backstroke (2:05.15) and Carley Vaughn in the 200 butterfly (2:08.45). 

York's Maddy Mann, the 2016 Rookie of the Year, secured her second individual gold of the weekend on Sunday in the 1650 freestyle (17:36.97). 

Marymount's Morgan Alston also collected her second gold of the championship on Sunday, taking top honors in the 200 breaststroke at 2:26.17. 

Mary Washington secured its 17th straight CAC men's swimming championship by winning 11 events and totaling 890 points on its way to the 2017 title on Sunday at St. Mary's. 

York finished second in the team standings with 635.5 points, followed by Salisbury in thid at 489. St. Mary's (388) edged Marymount (384.5) in a close battle for fourth, with Frostburg State rounding out the team scores with 230 points.

Frostburg State junior Christian March was selected as the CAC Swimming Athlete of the Year after capturing three individual titles. March won the 50 freestyle on Friday, the 100 breaststroke on Saturday, and wrapped up his championship with gold in the 200 breaststroke on Sunday in an NCAA 'B' cut time of 2:03.25. March is the first Frostburg State swimmer to earn Athlete of the Year accolades.

York head coach Greg Doyle was tabbed as the Coach of the Year for the first time. Doyle's award marks the fourth a York coach has received the honor, as Gina McHenry won COTY honors three times from 2004-07. 

UMW's Austin Farrar was named the Rookie of the Year, becoming the 12th Eagle overall and second straight to claim the award.

On Sunday, UMW's Tyler Gimple began the action with a victory in the 1650 freestyle, touching in an NCAA 'B' cut time of 16:10.54. Salisbury Pete Moyer also notched a 'B' cut mark of 16:16.60, finishing second.

UMW's Christian Berardo followed with a CAC and championship meet record time of 52.88 in the 100 IM. 

Dallas Tarkenton completed a highly-successful weekend for UMW with a triumph in the 200 butterfly in an NCAA 'B' cut mark of 1:51.09. Tarkenton also anchored the winning 400 freestyle to conclude the meet along with Jake Schroth, Gimple, and Dylan Gore in 3:06.87. Tarkenton totaled six golds throughout the meet, three individually and three on relays. 

York's Morgan Schreiber then notched his third overall and second individual gold of the weekend, winning the 200 backstroke in 1:52.62. Schreiber also won the 100 backstroke on Saturday, marking the second straight year that he secured gold in both backstroke events. 

York's Ian Kruper gave the Spartans their second victory of the day and fourth of the championship in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 47.49.
