SUNY-New Paltz Sweeps SUNY-Oswego

The State University of New York at New Paltz men’s swimming team (1-0) edged visiting SUNY Oswego (0-2-1) by a 146-116 final in the Hawks’ first dual meet of the 2012-13 season on Saturday at Elting Pool. New Paltz won 10 of the 14 events contested, and sophomore Marton Keri (Budapest, Hungary/Moricz Zsigmond Gimnazium) led the way with three individual event victories.

The Hawks had a quartet of multiple-event winners. Sophomore Jack Spader (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) won both the 1,000 freestyle (10:42.28) and the 500 freestyle (5:04.56), freshman Rod Taskindoust (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) took the 200 freestyle (1:49.87) and the 100 freestyle (50.02), Keri captured the 100 breaststroke (1:01.48), the 200 breaststroke (2:15.75) and the 200 individual medley (2:04.26) and freshman Ethan Cooke (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) topped the field in the 100 butterfly (57.87) and the 200 butterfly (2:10.60).

New Paltz won by more than seven seconds in the 200 medley relay, as the Hawks’ relay contingent of senior Bryan Farm (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South), Keri, Taskindoust and Cooke charted a time of 1:41.83.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday, Nov. 17, as they take on cross-river rival Vassar College at 1 p.m. at Elting Pool.



In its first dual meet of the 2012-13 season, the State University of New York at New Paltz women’s swimming team (1-0) powered its way to a 148-95 victory over SUNY Oswego (1-2) on Saturday afternoon at Elting Pool. New Paltz placed first in all 14 events contested at the meet.

The Hawks declared the 500 freestyle, the 100 butterfly, the 200 individual medley and the 400 freestyle relay as exhibition.

Juniors Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and seniors Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) all were double-event winners individually. Allocco captured first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:58.02) and the 200 individual medley (2:21.59), Scalise placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:59.26) and the 100 freestyle (55.14), Suzuka claimed first the 100 backstroke (1:01.60) and the 200 backstroke (2:14.57) and Marshall nabbed first in the 200 butterfly (2:14.60) and the 200 breaststroke (2:34.86).

In addition, freshman Krista VerMeersch (Newark, N.Y./Newark) won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.67), senior Katina Lown (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) touched first in the 50 freestyle (25.80), freshman Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central) topped the 500 freestyle field (5:24.64) and freshman Ella Graffin (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) notched a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:02.56).

The Hawks posted an event-best time in the 200 medley relay to start the meet, as the contingent of Suzuka, Marshall, Graffin and Scalise clocked a 1:53.12. To close the meet, New Paltz set a pool-record standard in the 400 freestyle relay by posting a 3:42.81. That record clipped the former mark of 3:42.86 that the Stevens Institute of Technology set last year.

The Oswego State men's and women's swimming and diving teams suffered a pair of losses to New Paltz on Saturday afternoon. The Laker men lost 146-116, while their counterparts fell 148-95. Austin Nau (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) won the 50 freestyle (23.17), the 100 backstroke (58.76), and led off the first-place 400 freestyle relay with a starting leg of 51.04 seconds.
 
Zach Gerber (Fr., Oswego, N.Y.), Matt Pamlanye (Jr., Holbrook, N.Y.) and Andrew Minnick (Jr., Latham, N.Y.) joined Nau in the 400 free relay to touch the wall in 3:26.83.
 
Additional event winners included Adam Weber (Sr., Clarence, N.Y.) in the 200 backstroke (2:08.31), Katie Flood (Jr., Hastings on Hudson, N.Y.) in the 200 individual medley (2:26.08), Laurie Jackson (Jr., Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in the 500 freestyle (5:50.22), Sabia Filiaci (So., Schenectady, N.Y.) in the 100 butterfly (1:03.14).
 
Andrew Minnick (Jr., Latham, N.Y.) was second in the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle with times of 51.12 and 1:50.62, respectively, and the 200 individual medley (2:09.71). Graham Burnell (Fr., Medina, Ohio) touched the wall second in the 100 fly (59.21) and the 200 fly (2:11.33), while Tom Schmid (Jr., Liverpool, N.Y.) had a runner-up finish in the 1,000 freestyle (10:52.44). Niklas Hesse (Fr., Stony Brook, N.Y.) had a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:06.99 and 2:29.03, respectively. Katie Flood also took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.69).
 
The men's and women's 200 medley relays both placed second with times of 1:48.99 and 2:00.03, respectively. Members of the men's relay consisted of Weber, Hesse, Burnell, and Pamlanye, while the women's relay was made up of Tracey Hagan (Fr., Burnt Hills, N.Y.), Flood, Filiaci, and Emily Plummer (Sr., Horseheads, N.Y.). The women's 400 freestyle relay made up of Emily Doe (Fr., Dansville, N.Y.), Plummer, Filiaci, and Jackson were first in the 400 freestyle relay as well.
 
Oswego State will face Brockport next Saturday at 1 p.m. in Brockport.
