Chris Schuler

Head Coach

Schuler enters her 25th season as the head coach for both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams. During her tenure, she has continued to build the program through the recruiting process while increasing the number of participants. Schuler’s background in sport psychology has taught her team dynamics and team culture is crucial for a program’s longevity and success. Her fundamental philosophy as a coach is to develop more than a team, but to create a family. When an athlete feels committed, dedicated to their team, their family, they will give much more to make a difference. Strong programs are made of hard work, great responsibility, and the highest respect. Schuler came to Oneonta after completing her master's degree in sport psychology in 1997 from Springfield (MA) College. While at Springfield she spent a season as an assistant coach at Elms College. She has proven experience in recruiting and coaching the Div. III student athlete from her stints at Elms and as an assistant at her Alma Mater, Clarkson University. A 1993 graduate of Clarkson, Schuler was team captain and Most Valuable Swimmer for both the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons. She holds three school records at the University in the backstroke, the breaststroke and the freestyle and received the Outstanding Swimmer Award as a senior. Schuler is the aquatics director at Oneonta and serves as an instructor within the physical education program. Schuler is certified by the American Red Cross in CPR and First Aid and as a Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Trainer. She also is a certified pool operator and ropes course facilitator for the challenge course at the SUNY Oneonta college camp She continues to participate in swimming and a pay it forward philosophy. Her overall advice to her athletes is the following ‘Never be afraid to try and fail, be ever so afraid of failing to try’.
