Washington State Clinches Win Against Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Washington State swim team opened 2017 with a convincing 170-87 victory over Oregon State, Friday night at the Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis, Ore. The Cougars garnered the top time in 13 of the meet's 14 events to give WSU its fifth-straight victory over the Beavers.

"Good swimming tonight," Washington State Head Coach Tom Jager said. "Great senior leadership from Addisynn (Bursch) and Kendra (Griffin). Rachel (Thompson) had a nice meet as well. Overall it was solid. We are looking forward to getting back home and swimming in Gibb Pool.”

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead, taking the top two spots in the 400 medley relay. WSU's team of Hannah Bruggman, Angela Mavrantza, Anna Brolin and Haley Rose Love took first with a time of 3:50.08. The team of Jasmine Margetts, Addisynn Bursch, Elise Locke and Anna Rosen garnered a second place finish with a 3:50.83.

Bursch added first-place finishes in the 50 free (24.41), 100 free (51.95) and in the 200 IM (2:03.75). The Spokane, Wash., native contributed 27 points to the Cougars' total.

Senior Griffin added 18 points to the WSU total, notching two first-place marks. In the 200 fly, Griffin finished first with a time of 2:04.47, just ahead of teammate Luci Brock who touched in 2:07.16. Griffin also secured the top spot in the 500 free, touching the wall in 5:03.06.

Washington State also gathered first-place finishes in the 200 fly and 1000 free. Junior Rachel Thompson finished the 200 free in 1:53.51, out-touching Locke by two seconds. Senior Jessica Marston took home her first win of the season with a 10:40.47 in the 1000 free.

Mavrantza, a freshman, notched her team-leading fifth and sixth wins of the season with impressive performances in the 100 breast (1:04.61) and the 200 breast (2:20.11).

Margetts clocked the fastest time of the 200 back, touching the wall in 2:00.55. In the 100 fly, Locke and Anna Brolin took the top two spots, clocking times of 57.33 and 57.48, respectively.

WSU closed out the meet strong with a first-place finish in the 200 free relay from the team of Love, Bruggman, Johnson and Rosen, clocking a time of 1:35.95.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 3-3 in dual meets this season.

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Freshman Felicia Anderson and senior Andrea Young paced the Oregon State women's swimming team Friday night against Washington State at the Osborn Aquatic Center. The Beavers fell to the Cougars, 170-87.
 
Anderson finished with tops times both her primary events. The freshman took first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.92 and finished second in the 200-yard with a touch of 2:04.41.
 
Young took second in all three of her events, including finishing just three-tenths behind the leader in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.44. The senior also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (53.17) and in the 200-IM (2:09.15).
 
Junior Corrine Shigeta added to the Beavers point total in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke with a pair of second place finishes. The Hawai'i native recorded a time of 1:05.80 in the 100-yard and a touch of 2:20.94 in the 200.
 
Oregon State will close the regular season tomorrow morning at 11 a.m., at Osborn against Idaho.
 
The Beavers will recognize its 10 seniors prior to Saturdays meet. Seniors include: Maranda Alf-Huynh, Jesikah Cavanaugh, Chelsea Chan, Taylor Frank, Anni Hecker, Czarina Isleta, Sophie MacEwan, Brooke Meyer, Alice Ochs and Andrea Young.
 
Following the weekend, Oregon State will begin preparations for the Pac-12 Championships that will take place February 22-25 at Federal Way, Washington.
