UMBC Men, FGCU Women Capture CCSA Titles

The UMBC men's swimming and diving team were named the 2017 CCSA Swimming and Diving Champions with 1,522 total points on Saturday, February 19.

Gardner-Webb finished the championship in second place with 1,216.5, while Incarnate Word took third with 1,207 points. Florida Atlantic tabbed fourth with 1,093 points, Old Dominion finished fifth with 1038.5 points and New Jersey Institute of Technology finished sixth with 517 points. Howard is in seventh with 376 points and Virginia Military Institute finished the championship in eighth place with 277 points.

Kyrylo Shvets from Incarnate Word finished first in the 1,650 free with a time of 15:27.82. Teammate Nathan Coppock finished roughly 20 seconds later with a time of 15:46.01, and Gardner-Webb's Peter Wakeley finished in a time of 15:51.59 for third place. UMBC swept the 200 backstroke with Alexander Gliese who finished in first with a time of 1:44.59, Ahmed Wahby finished second with a time of 1:46.06, and Garrett Wlochowski finished third with a time of 1:47.40.

In the 100 free, UMBC's Ilia Rattsev claimed first with a time of 44.23, while teammate Gregor Spoerlein claimed second with a time of 44.31. Jacob Zeidler from Old Dominion and Connor Bos from Gardner-Webb tied for third with times of 44.78 each. Jordan Mintz from Gardner-Webb finished first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:58.82. Teammates from UMBC Kyle Paxton and Connor Ganley finished second and third with times of 2:00.14 and 2:01.23, respectively.

Hector Ruvalcaba Cruz from Incarnate Word tabbed first with a time of 1:47.00 in the 200 butterfly. UMBC's Ahmed Wahby took second with a time of 1:48.61, followed by Beau Fusilier from Incarnate Word took third with a time of 1:49.37. UMBC claimed first place in the 400 free relay with a time of 2:58.21, Gardner-Webb finished second with a time of 2:59.18, and Florida Atlantic rounded out the top three with a time of 2:59.42.

Incarnate Word's Hector Ruvalcaba Cruz took home Men's Most Outstanding Freshman Performer of the Championship award, teammate Kyrylo Shvets took home the Men's Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Championship, and Ryan McIntire from Florida Atlantic took home the Diver of the Championship award.

UMBC's Chad Cradock was named the 2016-17 CCSA Men's Swimming Coach of the Year, while Florida Atlantic's Yaidel Gamboa was voted the 2016-17 CCSA Men's Diving Coach of the Year

With 1,574.5 points, the Florida Gulf Coast women's swimming and diving team were named the 2017 CCSA Swimming and Diving Champions after dominating the championship the last four days.

Liberty finished the runner-up with 1,355 points, Gardner-Webb finished third with 851 points, and Georgia Southern finished fourth with 818.5 points. Incarnate Word claimed fifth place with 770.5 points, Campbell claimed sixth with 695.5 points, and UNC Asheville claimed seventh with 639 points. North Florida came in at eighth place with 405 points, Howard finished in ninth place with 245 points, and Virginia Military Institute finished the championship in tenth place with 114 points.

In the 1,650 free, Delia Weber from Liberty took first with a time of 16:40.72, followed by Gardner-Webb's Lauren Oglesby who finished second with a time of 16:50.80. Liz Zeiger from Florida Gulf Coast rounded out the top three with time of 16:58.50. Florida Gulf Coast's Doris Eichhorn tabbed first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:58.09, Liberty's Victoria Tschoke took second with a time of 1:58.14, and Sandra Wilk from Florida Gulf Coast took third with a time of 1:59.89.

Florida Gulf Coast swept the 100 free with Fanny Teijonsalo taking first with a time of 49.26. Hannah Burdge took second with a time of 49.48 and Katie Latham took third with a time of 49.94. In the 200 breaststroke, Sommer Harris from Florida Gulf Coast tabbed first with a time of 2:15.57. Liberty's Prudence Rooker finished second with a time of 2:16.24 and UNC Asheville's Morgan Rulevich finished third with a time of 2:17.07.

In the 200 fly, Alicia Finnigan from Liberty took first home with a time of 1:57.08, Christina Kaas Elmgreen from Florida Gulf Coast finished second with a time of 1:57.10, and Gardner-Webb's Tessa Walsh finished third with a time of 2:01.12. Florida Gulf Coast claimed first with a time of 3:17.83 in the 400 free relay. Liberty finished second with a time of 3:21.98 and Campbell finished third with a time of 3:26.64.

Liberty's Brittany Weiss took home Women's Most Outstanding Freshman Performer of the Championship award, while FGCU's Christina Kaas Elmgreen took home the Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer.

FGCU's Ashley Wright took home the Diver of the Championship award.

First-year FGCU coach Dave Rollins was voted the 2016-17 CCSA Women's Diving Coach of the Year, while FGCU's David Boyko was named the 2016-17 Diving Coach of the Year.
