The second night of the Pac-12 Men’s Swimming Championships continued on with the finals of the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash. California remains in first place in the team standings with 298.5 points after day two. Stanford holds strong at second place, bringing in 278 points and USC sits in third with 218.
USC sophomore Cristian Quintero claimed the first individual final of the championships, winning the 500 free. In a time of 4:13.37 Quintero won the first Pac-12 title of his career. The Golden Bears claimed second and third place as sophomore Adam Hinsaw came in second at 4:18.08 and junior Jeremy Bagshaw placed third at 4:18.65.
In the 200-yard IM final Stanford sophomore Dave Nolan touched the wall first with a time of 1:42.41, defending his title and earning the seventh Pac-12 title of his career. Marcin Tarczynski, a junior from Cal, was next to touch at a time of 1:43.10. Cal freshman Josh Prenot rounded out the top three, finishing at 1:43.73 in the first Pac-12 final of his career.
USC claimed the top two spots in the 50-yard freestyle as junior Vladimir Morozov edged out the competition and won in a time of 18.86 to claim his second title in the event in as many years. Morozov finished just .04 shy of the meet record. Junior Jack Wagner touched second in a time of 19.53. In the first tie of the championships, Utah sophomore Nick Soedel and California sophomore Seth Stubblefield both finished at 19.64 to tie for third place.
In the final event of the evening, Morozov and the USC relay team of freshman Zachary Wagner, junior Dimitri Colupaev and Davis captured the title of the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:17.13. The Golden Bears pulled in another second-place finish on the night as junior Shayne Fleming, sophomore Fabio Gimondi, freshman Nick Dillinger and Stubblefield finished at 1:17.76. The relay team of senior Aaron Wayne, sophomore Jack Lane, senior Andrew Saeta and Nolan from Stanford earned third place with a time of 1:17.97.
The scores of the men’s one meter diving competition, which was held in conjunction with the women’s swimming championships last week, were factored into the team scores tonight as it is officially the sixth event in the championships. Stanford’s Kristian Ipsen placed first, Arizona State’s Harrison Jones claimed second and Cardinal Connor Kuremsky earned third place.
The 2013 Pac-12 Men’s Swimming Championships continue Tuesday, March 5 with preliminaries at 11 a.m. PT. The finals for the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 400 medley relay kick off at 6 p.m. PT.
