The largest building project LIU Brooklyn history, the $45 million, 114,000 square foot Steinberg Wellness Center opened in January 2006. Located at the corner of Ashland and DeKalb avenues, the Wellness Center is a hub of activity for student activities and athletic events.
The Blackbirds' men's basketball team christened the new home court with a 63-60 win over Sacred Heart on Jan. 26, 2006. The grand opening of the Wellness Center was for the LIU vs. St. Francis (N.Y.) men's basketball game on Feb. 27, 2006 - a 67-64 LIU victory.
The SWC features a 2,500-seat arena, an NCAA regulation-size swimming pool and a state-of-the-art fitness center and weight room. In addition, two tennis courts and a running track sit atop the roof. The SWC also features a wellness center that is geared toward a growing Brooklyn community. Cardiac rehabilitation, orthopedic therapy and asthma education services are available. The pool also features a hydraulic floor for aqua therapy.
The facility also serves as a venue for community civic and social events. The Steinberg Wellness Center has also hosted the VH1 Celebrity Hip-Hop Basketball Classic and various local high school sporting event.
